Michael piercy

​Michael is the owner-founder of The LAB, a member of the Under Armour training team and a TRX Master Course Instructor and Global Presenter. Mike is the recipient of two of the most prestigious awards in the fitness industry the 2017 IDEA Personal Trainer of The Year Award as well as 2013 TRX Overall Instructor of the Year award (F.A.C.E.U.P) given by his peers and colleagues for a great attitude, community spirit, and inspirational teaching.

Michael specializes in Performance enhancement for the modern athlete and active adults. He is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, Performance Enhancement Specialist and currently holds advanced level certifications through the organizations such as the, American Council on Exercise (ACE), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) as well as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). He has received his Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from Kean University and a Master of Science (MS) degree in Exercise Science and Performance Enhancement.

Michael came into the fitness industry full time following a career in professional baseball in which he played for Major league organizations consisting of Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets, and Montreal Expos. Mike has had the pleasure of working with and creating programs for many athletes from a vast array of major sports including competing athletes in the NFL, MLB, and NBA. Mike has been the preferred choice of Everyday athletes all the way up to Hall of Famers and Super Bowl Winners.

Susan Laney

​Susan’s love for fitness is fueled by creating healthier lives from the insight out on a global level.  Based out of Greensboro, NC, her background includes corporate health and wellness management, is a Les Mills Trainer/Presenter in BODYFLOW, BODYPUMP, CXWORX, Les Mills TONE and a DVD presenter in BODYVIVE and BODYFLOW. Susan is a 200-Hr Registered Yoga Teacher, Personal Trainer and holds ACSM (CEP) and NSCA (CSCS) certifications.  Mother of 3 awesome boys and one super-cool feline.

JoeL Ellen

​Joel Ellen’s health and fitness journey began in college but started all the way back in High school. Joel openly expresses that he grew up being known as the Chubby and/or funny guy. He was always involved in sports but had no idea how to eat or diet. Being put in the “friend-zone” through out high school as well as lacking in self confidence; motivated Joel to start taking better care of his body and mind. After his first semester in college at ASU, Joel switched his major from Psychology to Kinesiology which changed his life. He soon developed a deep passion for fitness, nutrition and exercise. Joel wanted to learn it all and wanted to become the best in the business! This took many days and nights of extra studying and experimenting using his body to try out different types of exercise and dieting trends. After graduating college, Joel continued to pursue his career in being a trainer/life coach and had the opportunity to work for many amazing companies including Nike and “The Biggest Loser”. Joel has acquired and studied many certifications form group training, personal training and nutrition to massage therapy, and physical therapy. One day Joel dreams of traveling around the world sharing what he has learned on his fitness journey and how he uses inspiration and motivation to make the world a healthier and happier place.

Dr. Alan Forrest

​Alan Forrest, Ed.D. is a Professor in the Department of Counselor Education at Radford University. Over the past 35 years he has held a variety of positions in both inpatient and outpatient mental health and substance abuse settings.  Dr. Forrest is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist who has extensive clinical experience in the areas of individual, couples, family, and group counseling.  He has facilitated training seminars, workshops, and retreats in the areas of loss, grief and bereavement; chemical dependency and family therapy; couples communication skill training; men's issues in counseling; and mindfulness/meditation practices in counseling. In addition to his personal mindfulness meditation practice, Alan has led, and co-led, mindfulness retreats for college and graduate students, medical students, human service and mental health professionals, educators, young adults and others. He is actively involved in infusing mindfulness into both his counseling practice and into the college classroom.  He is interested in mindfulness pedagogy and facilitates weekly mindfulness practice groups at Radford University for faculty and staff.  Alan has been a consultant and trainer for various mental health centers, school districts, hospices, businesses, and organizations. Alan is affiliated with a private practice, Life in Balance: Counseling & Wellness Center in Christiansburg.

Kelly Ferguson & Eugene Wells

Kelly holds certifications with AFAA (Athletics and Fitness Association of America), IFTA (Interactive Fitness Trainers of America) and Lemans Cycling.  Kelly has been leading group fitness classes for 16 years. Her passion for fitness began through a love for the family that can be created within a strong fitness class.  Kelly has worked to develop her skills by creating her own bootcamp program, IGNITE Bootcamp, and leading 8 week sessions that work to teach a love for one's own body while working to achieve physical goals.  Her specialty is in building a community within her classes while challenging each person individually.   Kelly strives to make each person recognize their own individual strengths, overcome obstacles and learn to recognize the accomplishments that they achieve during every single workout. 

Eugene holds certifications with AFAA (Athletics and Fitness Association of America), MOSSA Group Fitness, and IFA (International Fitness Association). He has lead group fitness classes for 15 years. Eugene specializes in motivating clients to achieve and exceed their fitness goals.  His love for watching them achieve their success has allowed him to develop his own fitness programs including co running IGNITE Bootcamp.  Eugene is the greatest cheerleader and motivator and enjoys helping people realize that they are stronger than they know.

​Kim Hamilton brings over 10+ years of experience in the fitness/wellness industry. She initially began her career as an athlete and found her way into coaching. She has been a certified CrossFit coach, personal trainer, and small group instructor since 2008. She additionally worked as an Assistant to the Strength & Conditioning Coaching staff at Cornell University, specializing in coaching Olympic Lifting technique with their athletes. Kim has been the lead Escape Fitness Master Trainer on the East Coast for over 5years now. She has completed over 40+ fitness program trainings, educating professionals from school districts, universities, and fitness clubs across the region.

members from all fitness levels and provides a fun, challenging, self-paced workout that delivers fabulous results. From beginner to high level athletes, come to sweat! 

Saturday @ 1:30pm: Escape Battle Fit
Created by former British Army Officers, this Bootcamp style class was created to integrate the principles of HIIT with functional movement and team/partner-based training.  This class gives the opportunity for clients to push their limits and break their perceived barriers of intensity. Grab a partner and join the team to tackle todays mission! 

Tori lord

​Dedicating her career to Campus Recreation, Tori began her fitness journey during her undergraduate work at Penn State University. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Tori attended Texas A&M University to pursue a Master’s degree in Sport Management. Then she returned to her Alma Mater at Penn State as a Fitness Coordinator to train new students in the same program that developed her love of fitness. Tori currently operates the recreational fitness programming at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Over the last 8 years, Tori has acquired several certifications and licenses such as AFAA Group Fitness Instructor, AFAA Personal Fitness Trainer, YogaFit Level 1, YogaFit Level 2, YogaFit Props, Pulsepointe Barre, Schwinn Cycling, Stairmaster Boxmaster, Zumba license, and Les Mills BODYPUMP.

Riley Shaia

​Riley Shaia has 24 year of experience in teaching group exercise and a
unique background in Physical Therapy which has equipped to her share
her knowledge base with other instructors and trainers as a Tabata
Bootcamp™ Master Trainer. She earned her B.S. in education with a
concentration in Sports Medicine from the University of Virginia and her
Masters in Physical Therapy from the Medical College of Virginia and enjoys
sharing her love of fitness with her class participants and other fitness
professionals. Riley’s high-energy approach applies not just to her passion
for fitness and nutrition but also for living life to the fullest.
 AFAA Certified.

Jaclyn Forrester

​Jaclyn Forrester began her studies in Exercise, Sports, Health and Education at Radford University. After graduating, she found herself seeking opportunities to continue her education. She stumbled on Pilates after doing research, and as soon as she saw the functionality and accessibility of Pilates, she was hooked. Jaclyn began studying Pilates in 2008 and completed RYT 200 in 2012. Over the years, her philosophy on workouts and training in the personal and professional sense have evolved from tough, bootcamp, push yourself workouts to more purposeful and functional movement patterns. 

Rebecca Peoples

​Rebecca Peoples is the Collegiate Recreation, East Region Manager for Matrix Fitness working closely with the US commercial sales team to provide colleges and universities with products and tools that increase their community building and wellness initiatives. With 20 years of coaching experience, she has a proven track record teaching and mentoring college students and athletes. Over the last five years, Peoples has been successfully harnessing her expertise with managing sales and strategic customer service on the vendor side. By having a deep understanding of her customer’s needs, she’s been able to deliver unique solutions for collegiate recreation facilities.

Inspiration Station
Inspiration - give it, receive it, be it!  An interactive workshop sharing sources of inspiration to and for those in collegiate recreation! Over the past 30 years, student mental health issues have increased, and fitness and physical activity levels continue to fall. Campus recreation is positioned to address these trends because regular exercise improves mental health.  Help us celebrate the instrumental role student trainers hold and the importance of a positively energized mindset as a campus leader. A thought-provoking, fun, open-forum style of sharing and collaboration. Circle Up!

Neil Frazier

​Neill is a Virginia Tech ('17) graduate and former two time president of the VT Crew Team. He built the Virginia Tech Crew Team Alumni Association from scratch which now annually raises $15-20,000 from alumni, family and friends. He is the founder of Alma Mater, a startup platform that helps student organizations connect and fundraise with their alumni. Alma Mater has helped over 150 organizations connect with 4,500 alumni and fundraise over $50,000.

Southeast Collegiate Fitness Expo

The Southeast Collegiate Fitness Expo is the premier university fitness & wellness experience on the east coast. More than 500 attendees from 40 to 50 universities come together each year for a weekend of networking, continuing education, and fun! The 2021 Fitness Expo at ECU marks the 28th year of the event, which began as a 1 day choreography exchange between the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, and James Madison University.  This is the first year that it will be held BOTH in-person and virtually!
